In this post, youโ€™ll learn how to make Mun Kiribath the authentic way, perfect for family breakfasts or festive celebrations.

Ingredients

1 cup raw short-grain rice

1/4 cup split mung dhal (soaked for 30 minutes)

1 cup fresh coconut milk

Salt to taste

Water as needed

Katta Sambol (see recipe below)

2 fresh curry leaves per cube (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook mung dhal: Boil soaked mung dhal until soft but still holds its shape.
  2. Cook the rice: Wash thoroughly and cook with enough water until soft.
  3. Mix coconut milk and dhal: Add coconut milk, salt, and the cooked mung dhal to the rice. Stir continuously over low heat until it thickens to a smooth, creamy consistency.
  4. Shape the Kiribath: Pour onto a clean tray and flatten evenly. Let it set slightly.
  5. Cut diamonds: Using a sharp knife, cut the set Mun Kiribath into five diamond-shaped cubes.
  6. Add the katta sambol: Shape the katta sambol like a rose on each cube. Place two fresh curry leaves to complete the flower design.
  7. Serve traditionally: Arrange on a coconut leaf tray for an authentic presentation.

Tip: Fresh coconut milk gives the best flavor and creaminess. Handle the Mun Kiribath gently while cutting to maintain perfect shapes.
