Mun Kiribath is a cherished traditional Sri Lankan dish, often prepared for special occasions like New Year, birthdays, or religious ceremonies. Its creamy texture, perfectly cut diamond shapes, and the spicy rose-shaped katta sambol make it not only delicious but also visually stunning. ๐ฟ
In this post, youโll learn how to make Mun Kiribath the authentic way, perfect for family breakfasts or festive celebrations.
Ingredients
1 cup raw short-grain rice
1/4 cup split mung dhal (soaked for 30 minutes)
1 cup fresh coconut milk
Salt to taste
Water as needed
Katta Sambol (see recipe below)
2 fresh curry leaves per cube (for garnish)
Instructions
- Cook mung dhal: Boil soaked mung dhal until soft but still holds its shape.
- Cook the rice: Wash thoroughly and cook with enough water until soft.
- Mix coconut milk and dhal: Add coconut milk, salt, and the cooked mung dhal to the rice. Stir continuously over low heat until it thickens to a smooth, creamy consistency.
- Shape the Kiribath: Pour onto a clean tray and flatten evenly. Let it set slightly.
- Cut diamonds: Using a sharp knife, cut the set Mun Kiribath into five diamond-shaped cubes.
- Add the katta sambol: Shape the katta sambol like a rose on each cube. Place two fresh curry leaves to complete the flower design.
- Serve traditionally: Arrange on a coconut leaf tray for an authentic presentation.
Tip: Fresh coconut milk gives the best flavor and creaminess. Handle the Mun Kiribath gently while cutting to maintain perfect shapes.
